A mirrorless design needs to do autofocus based on data from the image sensor itself, rather than from dedicated autofocus equipment. Because an SLR diverts light along a different path from the image sensor, sophisticated autofocus systems can be placed with a view of the scene without getting in the way of capturing the image (the look at the image off the mirror, like oyu do through the viewfinder). Back when image sensors could only be exposed once (film ), the only way to see through the lens was to divert the light to a viewfinder rather than having it hit the film. The only time that the image sensor is exposed to light is when a picture is captured. SLR means that you have an optical viewfinder and a mirror which combine to let you look through the lens before making an exposure.
